After joining the Wildlife College in June 2002 as Resource Facilitator, Sowry was promoted to Training Manager: Diploma Course at the end of that year. In November 2006 she took on the position of Executive Manager: Training. During this time, she also became a registered Assessor, Facilitator and Moderator through the Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Education and Training Authority (THETA).

Sowry, whose interests include vertebrate biology; systematics, eco-physiology, soil science, wetland ecology, terrestrial ecology, population ecology, census techniques, Geographic Information Systems and Environmental Impact Assessments, holds a Masters of Science degree in Botany.

At tertiary level Sowry was awarded a postgraduate scholarship from Wits for academic excellence in both 1996 and 1997. She was also awarded a postgraduate Merit Award from Wits and a postgraduate bursary in 1997 and 1998. In 1999 she was awarded the grassroots prize for academic excellence in grassland science.
