Mary Cabela was born and raised in Wyoming’s wide open spaces where small-game hunting with her brother not only provided meal for the table, but also the foundation of a passion for the outdoors that has burned deep within her ever since. Nearby plains, mountains, and rivers provided her young heart an endless bounty of experiences and adventures in beauty of Creation.
She went to high school in Sidney, Nebraska where she met the love of her life, Dick Cabela. Together, they explored the plains of western Nebraska and raised nine children. The Cabelas founded one of the world’s best known and most respected outdoor companies. Together, they hunted the world—falling particularly in love with Africa. They shared, in their two hearts, a passion for God, family, and the outdoors. Those passions defined their lives and became for them, not three separate loves, but one continuous adventure so interconnected they could not tell where one began or one ended. They understood God in their family, their family in the outdoors, and the outdoors in God.
If this is then how her life is defined, it is no surprise that all her efforts, time, and treasure have been given in one form or another to her God, her family, and the outdoors. Love requires action and if all she did was simply take her children hunting and fishing, Mary, like so many other parents, would have made significant contributions to the conservation legacy hunters and anglers should be so proud of. But because of her love, she does so much more as she continues to hunt, to fish, to give, and to share her passions with others.
